McGillin’s Olde Ale House threw open its doors the year Lincoln was elected president. That’s shortly after the Liberty Bell cracked and long before ground was broken for Philadelphia City Hall. The beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia and one of the oldest taverns in the country.
CELEBRATING JOHN'S 5️⃣0️⃣TH ANNIVERSARY AT McGILLIN'S
Saturday, 4/27 from noon - 5 pm 🍾
John Doyle started working here in April 1974, making him the longest-serving bartender at Philadelphia’s oldest operating bar. And probably in the city, state & maybe the country. The bar will toast him with a year-long celebration beginning on 4/27 and ending on 3/17/25, which will be his 50th St. Patrick’s Day here.
Over the years John has worked for 3 generations of ownership at McGillin’s. He's served professional athletes, rock stars, actors/actresses & other celebs. He’s spanned 8 Philly mayors & has served most of them, other national politicians from the US and abroad, including a future president. In fact, he's been asked to run for president himself and so "John Doyle for President" is the theme of our year-long celebration.

In 1970, 3 gals were on their way to a party. They couldn’t find the location but fortunately they decided to head to McGillin’s instead. A group of co-workers from First Pennsylvania Bank sat at the first table. The gals recognized one of them and stopped to talk. Gay wasn’t looking to meet anyone that night, but fate had other plans. She found herself standing next to Chuck. Neither remembers who started the conversation, but they do remember that it went on for hours. And for three dates over the next three weeks and then daily for almost a year, until they got married 51 weeks later. And the rest is history.
McGillin’s has mating magic. More couples have met at McGillin’s than anywhere else in Philadelphia.
